Election Resources for Independents in Kansas
Can I vote in primary elections as an independent in Kansas?
It depends. Kansas has partially closed primaries. Some states have partially closed primary systems that permit certain voters to participate while excluding others. Independent voters can participate in only a few of the partially closed systems.

Caveats:
In Kansas, unaffiliated voters can vote in either primary. BUT this automatically registers you as a party member. Independents will have to change their affiliation if they wish to vote in a different primary for the following election.
How do I register to vote as an independent in Kansas?
Kansas allows for voter registration in person, online, and by mail. However, it does not offer automatic voter registration. Kansas maintains a partially closed primary system, though it benefits independent voters. While Republicans and Democrats are limited to their party primaries, independents can choose either. Voters must be registered at least 21 days before an election, and no election-day registration exists. Kansas opens early voting about 20 days before an election (it varies by county), and it allows no-excuse absentee voting.
Is it hard to vote as an independent?
Yes, it can be. In some states, independent voters face barriers like closed primaries that exclude them unless they change their party registration each election. Others offer open primaries, allowing all voters to participate regardless of party. Some states make registration seamless with same-day options, while others require voters to plan weeks or even months ahead.
Navigating these challenges takes awareness and action—but that’s exactly why the Independent Center exists. We’re here to empower independent voters, break down barriers, and build a movement for real change. Join us and make your voice heard.
