New Hampshire

New Hampshire only offers in-person voter registration unless you meet certain requirements to do so by mail (referred to as absentee registration). Registration can be done before an election or on election day. Additionally, New Hampshire does not offer automatic voter registration or early voting. To vote absentee-by-mail, a voter must meet certain requirements. The good news for independents is that the party primaries are open to unaffiliated voters and do not require them to register as partisans. Registered partisans are only allowed to vote in their party’s primary.

Yes, it can be. In some states, independent voters face barriers like closed primaries that exclude them unless they change their party registration each election. Others offer open primaries, allowing all voters to participate regardless of party. Some states make registration seamless with same-day options, while others require voters to plan weeks or even months ahead.

Navigating these challenges takes awareness and action—but that’s exactly why the Independent Center exists. We’re here to empower independent voters, break down barriers, and build a movement for real change. Join us and make your voice heard.
