For too long, independents have been dismissed as “spoilers.” It’s time to flip the script—and proudly own the label.
Independents make up the largest share of voters in America, yet are too often ignored, sidelined, or mocked as spoilers. That label has long been used as an insult, meant to discredit our role in elections. But what if being a spoiler isn’t a bad thing? What if spoiling is exactly what our democracy needs?
Spoiling toxic partisanship
The two major parties have spent decades locked in a zero-sum battle for power. Independents are disrupting this cycle, challenging politicians to prioritize problem-solving over partisanship.
Spoiling broken systems
From gerrymandered districts to outdated election rules, too many parts of our system are designed to protect politicians instead of voters. Independents are demanding reform—and spoiling the games that keep citizens sidelined.
Spoiling dysfunction in Washington
Gridlock and extremism dominate headlines, while real solutions take a backseat. Independents are holding leaders accountable, pressing for effective governance that works for everyone.
Spoiling the narrative
We’re not spoilers of democracy. We’re spoilers of toxic politics. By embracing the label, independents are turning it into a badge of honor—and a rallying cry for change.
Spoiler Alert
According to the Independent Center’s September 2025 poll:
- Independents are the largest political group in America. 30% of Americans identify as Moderate Centrist/Independent — the single largest political group, bigger than strong Democrats (23%) or strong Republicans (23%).
- Most voters would likely vote for an independent candidate. 66% of voters say they would vote for a strong independent candidate who shares their views.
- Nearly half of Americans demand more choice. 47% of Americans want more ballot choices, including independents and third parties.
- Independents are gaining favorability. Only 8% of Gen Z view independents as spoilers, compared to 27% of the Silent Generation
America Needs Spoilers
For years, independents have been told our votes “don’t count” or that we only get in the way. But the truth is, America needs spoilers—people willing to disrupt a system that no longer works. By spoiling partisanship, gridlock, and broken promises, independents are creating space for accountability and real solutions.
That’s what this campaign is about: owning the spoiler label and proving that independents are a force for progress.
