President Trump Losing Ground with Independent Voters Over Promises Unkept

Washington, DC – “Independent voters swung for Trump in 2024 because they wanted a better economic outlook, increased government efficiency, and reduced polarization. Are they getting those things? No. Have they noticed? You bet,” said Independent Center President Lura Forcum in response to recent polling data from Independent Center polling partner, the Bullfinch Group.

While Trump remains popular among Republicans and unpopular with Democrats, this recent survey shows that he’s losing support among independents on the issues they considered most important before his inauguration in January: lowering the debt and deficit, reducing prices and inflation, cutting government spending, and easing political tensions and divisions.

In this latest poll, which sampled 1,223 adults, including 1,006 registered voters from June 17-20, 2025, independent voters have expressed their frustration and disapproval of the Trump administration on these issues.

Only 37% of independents approve of Trump’s overall job performance. Just 26% of independent voters support Trump’s ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA).’ Additionally, 52% of independents are less likely to support the OBBBA after hearing concerns about the bill’s potential to significantly increase the debt and deficit – which is a priority for independent voters. And roughly 60% of independent voters approve of elected officials who are able to overcome political tensions and work across the aisle with the opposing party.

“Independent voters have made it clear they are unhappy with the direction things are going. They voted for President Trump in November for economic reasons and now largely disapprove of his first major economic act. If the Trump administration and the Republican-controlled Congress fail to address the debt, the deficit, the rising cost of living, and increasing political division, independent voters will do what only nonpartisan voters can do – hold the party in power accountable at the ballot box,” Forcum observed.
